However, in more recent years, it has come to be known as home of Wayne Gretzky, birthplace of the famous NHL hockey player. Strategically located between two U.S. borders (Buffalo & Detroit), Brantford's Highway #403 allows easy access to larger Canadian cities like Hamilton and Toronto. Brantford proudly hosts a campus of Wilfred Laurier University in its downtown core. The Grand River allows the community the recreation of canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. Several of the city's kilometres of natural trails follow the "Grand" and link the City to Cambridge and Hamilton for bikers and hikers. Surrounding Brantford, Brant County consists of the larger communities of Paris, St. George and Burford, as well as many smaller villages. Paris is known as one of the "Prettiest Towns in Ontario" with its bustling downtown , charming shops and restaurants that overlook the Grand River. St. George is reminiscent of a small British Village. The downtown has several pubs, unique shops and boutiques of fine collectables and antiques. Burford, located 8 kilometres west of the city, this rural community has a small town feel. Ginseng farming has grown to be the industry of choice in this area, as well as dairy, poultry, hog and fish farming businesses.
